Remera Valley revisited

On July 18th, I revisted Remera Valley but I went much further down. I braved going through the shanty suburb. Actaully I found the people there freiendly and I felt safe all the time.

  • There is no real need to bird very early. The altitude keeps temperatures down to at most 25 or 26 C. Birds are active all day.
  • The valley gets wetter further down and the species begin to change.
  • 29 species were seen in all.
  • Three lifers were: western citril, Holub's golden-weaver and green-winged pytilia.
  • I flew the next day to Hargeisa in Somaliland

Scarlet-chested sunbird doesn't have males in eclipse plumage. The bird I feature here is an immature male.

There is a semi-cultivated area part way down the valley. This was worth waiting at for an hour or two to see what emerged.

Just before the shanty town there are few small pools. These attract swallows and of course malachite kingfisher

The locals farm near the shanty suburb. Hadada ibis and sacred ibis were in the fields.

The green-winged pytilia was seen on the way back up the hill.
